Carol’s Hey Day Dungarees!
I’m so pleased to be chatting to you today as I’ve finally found the perfect corduroy to make my Made by Jacks Mum, Hey Day Dungarees!

I’ve seen so many lovely versions of this pattern on social media, in lots of different fabrics. Both patterned and plain in Cotton Twill, Drill, Denim and canvas to name but a few, and although I have used needle cord in a few makes recently, I had it in my head that my perfect Hey Days just had to be made in a chunky cord!

I don’t know about you, but I feel until recently there seemed to be a real shortage of chunky cord on the websites of my favourite online fabric retailers.

So, I cannot tell you how thrilled I was when Felicity Fabrics got this gorgeous Navy Chunky cord in the shop! I knew instantly what I wanted to make in it!!
Yep, you’ve guessed “The dream Hey days!” So here I am rocking the inner toddler look!

The pattern uses a folded over edge for around the bib and opening, but I decided to change it up and create a facing instead. This was really easy, as I just traced the around bib pattern piece (front and back) and measured down 10cm then mirrored the original shape of the bib (don’t forget to remove the seam allowance).
For this I chose to use up some scraps of cotton I had left over from a previous make, it was a cotton shirt I had previously made, which I interfaced with iron on Vlieseline. I definitely think this was a good move as it reduced the bulk around the bib area and gave the insides a nice neat finish. As you can see here.

I hand stitched the facing down to the centre front seam to stop it popping up, when I put the dungarees on. It is also great to be using up scraps of pretty fabric which would have ended up in the bin!
If you find the cord is a little bulky, here’s a little tip for you! I personally don’t have a “humper jumper” So I folded up a scrap of cord and popped it under the back of my presser foot, this allowed my sewing machine to stitch perfectly over the start of the seam.
This chunky Corduroy is a very generous 145cm wide and currently available from Felicity Fabrics in three colourways, this one which is Navy, Black and also the most delicious dusky pink!

What’s more I think they are an absolute bargain at £6 and £7 per half meter. Don’t you just love when you can buy fabrics by the half meter? It really bugs me when a pattern requires 1.5m but I have no option but to buy 2m, such a waste of fabric and money!

I really hope you like my make, as I cannot tell you how much I’m enjoying wearing my new chunky cord dungarees, and the fabric is just what I have been waiting for. They are now in constant rotation in my wardrobe, both for leisure wear and my days working from home. They are every bit as comfy and warm as they look!
