Hi everyone! Very excited to be guest blogging for the lovely girls over at Felicity Fabrics. And thrilled that my project has worked out so well to show you all… I hope you like it!
I knew from the get-go that I would be choosing a floaty, drapey fabric for my project, as it was going to be posted in Summer. And all I want in the heat is fabric off my shoulders, and to be breathable and nothing to tight or restrictive. So immediately zoned in on the lovely selection of viscoses on the Felicity Fabrics website. I love a bit of colour, so this fuschia cheetah print was a love-at-first-sight moment.
I had been eyeing up some different strappy dress patterns, as I knew I was going to want this dress to be suitable for a little girls holiday to Ibiza too. So I was thinking strappy and a little bit dressy. Then I stumbled across the True Bias Calvin Dress pattern. It ticked all the boxes! A lovely midi-length wrap dress. It involves A LOT of bias binding, which didn’t exactly excite me (!), but I was already completely sold on the pattern, so I could forgive that 🙂
And honestly, the bias binding is the most tricky part of the whole process of this pattern. The rest was so straightforward! Not many pattern pieces, so it was quick to cut out. And I really enjoyed slowing down for making the bias binding – it was so satisfying to know that I had made the binding myself.
I even splurged out on an adjustable bias binding foot for my machine, which really helped with applying the binding. Not a complete breeze because it was a tiny bit slippy – but it made a tricky process a lot easier at least!
The end result is a dress that I completely adore. The fit is so flattering – and because it is a wrap dress, you can fit it to yourself exactly. The fabric perfectly compliments the pattern – enough drape and swish, completely opaque (because don’t you just hate it when a dress fabric is a tiny bit sheer), soft and breathable. It is just a complete pleasure to wear!
I got so many lovely comments when I wore this out for the first time for our girls’ dinner on a hot summer evening in Ibiza. And I was proud as punch to reply with ‘thanks, I made it’ 🙂
Many more Calvin dresses to come from me – I’m honestly blown away by the flattering fit. I think I’ve found a new fav pattern! Eeek!
